SCBWI Philippines is the Philippine chapter of the Society of Children’s Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI).
It is run by Beaulah Pedregosa Taguiwalo, Regional Advisor, and Dominique Garde Torres (Nikki), Assistant Regional Advisor, with the help of Karina Africa Bolasco and Neni Sta. Romana Cruz, Chapter Advisory Board Members.
The SCBWI Philippines chapter started in November 2001. Soon after that, in January 2002, it held its first event Meet the Author Jo Kittinger when Jo, from SCBWI Southern Breeze (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi), came to Manila.
Since then, SCBWI Philippines has held more Meet the Author/Illustrator events, a whole-day workshop by Australian SCBWI Regional Advisor Jen McVeity on The Art and Business of Writing and Illustrating for Children, two seminars on Postmodern Picture Books by children’s author Neni Sta. Romana Cruz and publisher Karina Africa Bolasco, an illustrator’s workshop by SCBWI Japan’s Co-Regional Advisor John Shelley, a talk on Writing Poetry for Children by Lara Saguisag, and others.
For several years now, SCBWI Philippines has also been holding a Children’s Lit Booktalk & Critique every 2nd Monday of the month. It is usually held in Makati, Metro Manila, and is open to both SCBWI members and non-members.
In addition to the monthly Booktalk & Critique, SCBWI Philippines also conducts an annual Children’s Book Seminar & Workshop. It has been held every year in Iloilo City since 2007, in cooperation with the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) Chancellor’s Committee for Culture and the Arts (CCCA).
SCBWI Philippines complements the work of other children’s book-oriented organizations in the country. It is in a unique position to offer both published and unpublished children’s book writers and illustrators:
* a focus on writing and illustrating children’s and young adult (YA) books that appeal not only to Filipinos in the Philippines but also to readers in other countries;
* help and support (not guarantees!) in getting published not only in the Philippines but also in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and other emerging foreign markets like China, Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia;
* an internationally-oriented group that welcomes and addresses the concerns of those who come home to the Philippines from abroad, or pass through the country to stay for a few weeks, months, or years.
